March 2021 – Important Note to Older Explorers and 18+

Hi All

This e-mail is being sent to all Explorers who have turned 18 in the last year or will be turning 18 soon. Explorers will be starting up again properly in April.

We have put together the following FAQ for you all:

  • As I am over 18, do I need to be a Network member if I am attending Alton Towers, Kandersteg+ 2023 or other such trips organised by the Explorer leaders that are open to Network?

YES, to attend these trips if you turn 18 before the start, you will need to register as a member of Network (or be a full leader). This is why we suggest you register for Network ASAP so that you are not disappointed, particularly as the Alton Towers trip will be happening soon.

  • What is Network, how do I become a member and do I have to pay subs?

Network is for 18 to 25 year olds and is the next step up from Explorers, there are no subs to pay. Expect social activities, more adventurous activities, to continue your D of E – all with a relaxed approach. Meetings happen informally and you can dip in and out if, for example, you go off to University. Everything is arranged over WhatsApp.

Jon King is in charge of Network in Potters Bar and either Jon or James Sanderson can sign you up to Network quickly. Contact either of them (on james.sanderson@pbscouts.org.uk) or simply join the WhatsApp Group by visiting: pbscouts.org.uk/g/nwa

Anwar, Jodie and James are also involved in Network planning.

  • How long does it take to sign up to Network?

It is near instant, all we need are a few pieces of personal information.

  • Can I continue attending Explorer meetings once I am 18 or over?

It is not possible to attend Explorer meetings once you turn 18 without an adult role in Scouting.

It is, however, possible for you to attend as an adult helper with the Unit and therefore you are invited to apply for the role of an Occasional Helper with the Unit (see next question). This is not the same as being a full leader and you will not be required to come to each activity. All we ask is that you help run the Unit effectively and help deliver activities.

You can attend a maximum of two meetings to see if you would like to be an Occasional Helper, we will have to turn you away on the third meeting you attend if you have not completed the process to become an Occasional Helper (see next question).

  • How do I become an Occasional Helper at Explorers?

To become an Occasional Helper, you will need to go through a quick criminal records check with James Sanderson (or Peter Weaver) and complete a very short online training child safeguarding course. In total, signing up will take one hour of your time. If you like, we can process everyone on the same day – please organise amongst yourselves.

Please contact James to arrange.

  • Can I be a Network member and Occasional Helper at the same time?

Yes, they separate. You can be a Network member and hold adult roles too (Anwar, Jodie and James have done this).

  • What are the other options at 18?

See our website here: pbscouts.org.uk/18 or take a look at the flyer attached. Do consider becoming a full leader – talk to any leaders for info.

  • Now that I am 18 will the Explorer and Network leaders still be my DofE Leaders and be able to help me achieve the award etc.?

Absolutely, we are here to help you achieve your award – even if it takes you until age 25!

We will be very happy to answer any questions you might have, just reply to this e-mail.

Thanks,

Leaders
